CAPM Exam Complete Guide (2026) — Format, Domains, Eligibility & Study Plan

Everything about PMI's Certified Associate in Project Management: 150-question format, 4 ECO domains with weightage, eligibility (23 contact hours), fees, and a 4-week study plan.

The CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) is PMI's entry-level credential for people who want into project work but can't sit the PMP yet — students, career changers, and coordinators. Here's the current exam in one place: format, domains, eligibility, cost, and how to prepare.

  • Format: 150 questions in 180 minutes — 135 scored + 15 unscored pretest (you can't tell which is which, so answer everything).
  • Break: one 10-minute break after question 75.
  • Types: mostly multiple-choice, plus multiple-response, matching, and hot-spot items. Questions are largely scenario-based — "what should you do next?" — not vocabulary tests.
  • Delivery: Pearson VUE test center or online with remote proctoring, offered in 8 languages.
  • Attempts: up to 3 tries within your one-year eligibility window.

The 4 Domains & Weightage

PMI builds every CAPM exam from the Exam Content Outline (ECO): 4 domains, 19 tasks, with fixed domain-level coverage. Agile + Business Analysis together are nearly half the exam — candidates who prep predictive-only walk in ready for barely half the test.

Domain Weightage in Exam

Domain 1 — PM Fundamentals & Core Concepts36%
Domain 4 — Business Analysis Frameworks27%
Domain 3 — Agile Frameworks/Methodologies20%
Domain 2 — Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies17%

Domain 1 — Fundamentals & Core Concepts (36%, 5 tasks)

The scoring engine. How projects create value; project vs program vs portfolio; predictive vs adaptive; org structures and PMO; PM/team roles; life-cycle phases; artifacts and documents; risk vs issue vs assumption vs constraint; reading risk and stakeholder registers.

Pro Tip: learn to place any scenario in the right phase and identify who owns what — this skill powers the other three domains too.

Domain 4 — Business Analysis Frameworks (27%, 6 tasks)

The most underestimated domain. Requirements elicitation and documentation; stakeholder identification and analysis; traceability (RTM); validating requirements against business needs; acceptance-criteria logic.

Pro Tip: drill "traceability trap" questions — where a requirement looks done but isn't linked back to a business need.

Domain 3 — Agile Frameworks/Methodologies (20%, 5 tasks)

Adaptive delivery as a first-class approach: agile mindset and values; when adaptive fits better than predictive; Scrum roles, events, artifacts; Kanban boards and WIP limits; backlog prioritization; iterative delivery and feedback.

Pro Tip: study agile as decision-making ("requirements changed — what now?"), not vocabulary lists.

Domain 2 — Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies (17%, 3 tasks)

The smallest domain but easy marks: WBS and work packages; building and reading schedules; critical-path basics; schedule/cost variance logic; baselines and controls.

Pro Tip: do 30–50 targeted reps on WBS, dependencies, and critical-path reasoning — the highest marks-per-hour in the exam.

Eligibility & Cost

  • Education: secondary degree (high school / GED / associate or global equivalent).
  • Training: 23 contact hours of project management education completed before the exam (PMI removed the 1,500-hour experience path in Aug 2024 — education is now the only route).
  • Exam fee: ~$225 (PMI member) / ~$300 (non-member). Membership (~$139–159/yr) doesn't pay for itself on CAPM savings alone — confirm current fees at pmi.org before budgeting.
  • Scoring: PMI publishes no flat pass mark; your report shows Above Target / Target / Below Target / Needs Improvement per domain. Practical benchmark: consistently scoring 72%+ on realistic full-length mocks means you're ready.

4-Week Study Plan (Weighted by ECO)

  • Week 1 — Fundamentals: life cycles, roles, artifacts, registers. Goal: read any scenario and name the phase, owner, and right tool.
  • Week 2 — Business Analysis: requirements, RTM, acceptance criteria, stakeholders. Goal: stop losing marks on "what should you do next?" traps.
  • Week 3 — Predictive mechanics: WBS, critical path, variance logic, baselines. Goal: bank the easy structured marks.
  • Week 4 — Agile + full mocks: Scrum/Kanban decisions, then 2+ timed 150-question mocks to build 3-hour stamina.

FAQs

Do I need project experience for CAPM?
No — PMI removed the experience option in 2024. Secondary degree + 23 contact hours is the full bar.

How many questions are scored?
135 of 150. The other 15 are unscored pretest items mixed invisibly into the exam.

CAPM or PMP?
If you qualify for the PMP (experience + 35 hours), go straight there. Otherwise CAPM is the clean entry point — and the hours overlap when you bridge later.
